Range will use about as much battery as listening to music.
If you're trying to optimize battery life, keep Range in vertical/instant-read view with the screen off when you don't need to see the temperature — you'll still get alerts.
If you keep the app open in the foreground, the screen will stay on. If the app is running in the background, the screen will turn off as your iOS device's settings dictate.
