When you're in the Range app, slide your finger up or down and you'll see a horizontal line with the alert temperature appear. Let go to set the alert, and even if Range Dial is disconnected from your phone, Range Dial will beep when it hits the target temperature.
It doesn't matter what preset Range Dial is turned to for alerts to be set from the app.
